Pune, 25th June 2025: In a major step to ease the burden on city motorists, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has instructed all towing agencies to stop collecting towing charges when the vehicle owner is not present at the scene of a said violation. Under the revised rule, only the standard fine for no-parking will be imposed in such instances.

The said decision comes in response to growing public grievances regarding overcharging and the unprofessional conduct of towing staff, many of whom are hired through private contractors. During a recent review meeting, Commissioner Kumar emphasized the need for towing personnel to remain courteous and respectful while dealing with citizens, especially in situations involving parking infractions.

In a further measure to ensure transparency, towing teams have now been instructed to use loudspeakers to notify about violations before taking action. This initiative is expected to allow vehicle owners the opportunity to move their vehicles and avoid penalties altogether.

Previously, motorists were charged ₹785 for two-wheelers — comprising a ₹500 fine (including GST) and ₹285 towing charge — and ₹1,071 for four-wheelers, which included a ₹571 towing fee. According to the information given by the officials, if the vehicle is unattended at the time of the action, only the ₹500 fine will be levied from the concerned.
