Pune, 4th June 2025: The path for local body elections in Maharashtra has been cleared by a Supreme Court order, prompting the Maharashtra State Government to make crucial decisions regarding civic governance. In a significant move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will undergo a new ward formation process, while the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will retain its ward structure as it was in 2017.

Across the state, nine municipal corporations have seen their boundaries expanded, necessitating new ward delimitations. Pune is among the major municipal corporations affected by this change. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government has decided that the existing ward structure will remain unchanged in 17 other municipal corporations.

The Supreme Court has ordered that elections must be held within the next four months. In response, the state government has begun planning the ward formation and election process. Official orders regarding these measures are expected to be announced soon.

The Mahayuti government has confirmed that these elections will be conducted using the four-member ward system, a method that was also implemented in 2017. Since then, many municipal corporations have experienced boundary expansions, and in some cases, a two-member ward system was applied. These areas will now require new ward formations.

Against this backdrop, all political parties have accelerated their preparations for the elections, injecting fresh momentum into local politics. The developments have sparked increased activity and anticipation in the political landscape.
