Pune: Fire Breaks Out in Kothrud’s Vanaj Housing Society; Two Injured, Trapped Residents Safely Rescued

Kothrud, 5th June 2025: A fire broke out in the meter room of Vanaj Housing Society, Kothrud, at 2:34 PM on Thursday, causing extensive smoke and heat damage across the building’s 7th, 8th, and 9th-floor passages. The blaze, which started due to wiring in the duct, led to large amounts of smoke and high temperatures, melting wiring and doorbells on all three affected floors.
Firefighters from Kothrud Fire Station responded swiftly, extinguishing the fire and conducting a thorough search of each flat to ensure no one was trapped. During the operation, several residents found on upper-floor balconies were safely evacuated, while others were found to have suffered injuries. Four individuals from a third-floor flat panicked and jumped to the second-floor balcony, resulting in a 17-year-old girl, Mrinmayi, sustaining a foot injury. An 85-year-old man, Lakshman Padwal, also suffered a foot injury while descending the staircase.
In total, two people were injured in the incident. The fire destroyed 24 meters of duct wiring within the building. The fire brigade team included Officer-in-Charge Sunil Name, Driver Datta Gogawale, Dnyaneshwar Bathe, Chandrakant Gawade, Amol Pawar, Fireman Shankar Wable, Shivkumar Mane, Manoj Gaikwad, Santosh Bhosale and Yogesh Lokhande.
Other residents involved in the incident include Supriya Kalekar (age 45), Arohi Kalekar (age 12), and Maithili (age 17), Mrinmayi’s twin sister.
