Pimpri-Chinchwad, 27th June 2025: Lumpy skin disease has re-emerged in Pimpri-Chinchwad, with 12 cases reported among cattle in the past ten days. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) confirmed that the viral infection, which affects cows, buffaloes, bulls, horses, and camels, is being actively contained through a targeted vaccination campaign. The city is home to approximately 2,400 domestic animals, and authorities are taking swift measures to prevent further spread.

The disease, caused by the capripox virus, manifests as fever, nodules on the skin, and swelling, leading to reduced milk production and, in some cases, lameness. It spreads through biting insects like mosquitoes and flies, as well as through direct contact and contaminated feed or water. In response, the municipal corporation has urged livestock owners to isolate infected animals, avoid communal grazing, and promptly report symptoms such as reduced appetite or abnormal discharge.

To control the outbreak, PCMC has deployed veterinary teams and initiated a vaccination drive, with 1,500 vaccine doses supplied by the state animal husbandry department. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Khot, incharge of PCMC’s Veterinary Department stated that these measures are aimed at curbing the spread and safeguarding the city’s livestock. The corporation has also launched awareness campaigns to educate animal owners about preventive steps and early detection.

With the onset of monsoon, conditions are favorable for the spread of vector-borne diseases like lumpy skin disease, making vigilance and immunization critical for Pimpri-Chinchwad’s cattle population.
