Pune, 23rd May 2025: Early monsoon showers have inflicted severe damage on Pune’s road infrastructure, triggering the widespread formation of potholes and leaving both major and internal roads riddled with hazards. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) claims to have addressed 724 potholes so far, but persistent rainfall continues to challenge repair efforts and disrupt daily commutes.

Roads across the city’s suburbs, newly merged villages, and heavy traffic corridors have deteriorated rapidly, with waterlogged potholes and loose gravel increasing risks for motorists, especially two-wheeler riders who face a surge in accidents. Recent asphalting work has been undone by the rains, stripping away fresh layers and spreading gravel across surfaces. Additionally, asphalt around manhole covers has eroded, creating new pools of standing water and further amplifying safety concerns.

The PMC has been receiving a steady stream of complaints from citizens, its PMC Care app users, the flying squads, and traffic police. Between April 1 and May 21, the civic body’s road department received reports of 778 potholes, of which 724 have been filled using cold mix and chemical concrete solutions. With the monsoon progressing, repair work on remaining potholes will continue as soon as conditions allow.

Aniruddh Pavaskar, Head of the Road Department, stated, “This year, the rains have begun earlier than usual. Despite this, we are carrying out urgent repairs as soon as potholes are reported. So far, 724 potholes have been filled, and we will act immediately on any new complaints. We are also implementing measures to prevent water accumulation on roads.”
