Pune: Opposition Mounts Against Proposed Garbage Processing Plant in Ramtekdi

Hadapsar, 8th June 2025: Strong opposition is brewing against the proposed garbage processing plant at Ramtekdi in Hadapsar, with former corporator Yogesh Sasane and leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) warning of street protests if the project is not scrapped.
Sasane, along with Pune city NCP president Prashant Jagtap, Bandu Gaikwad, and Nilesh Magar, recently met Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to register their objection. A formal memorandum was submitted, citing health hazards and the absence of public consultation as key concerns.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a 75-tonne capacity waste treatment facility aimed at processing bulky waste such as mattresses, furniture, chairs, and pillows. Estimated to cost ₹66 crore, the project was cleared during a standing committee meeting under former commissioner Rajendra Bhosale. However, critics claim the plan was approved hastily and without proper land acquisition or environmental clearance.
Local leaders argue that Hadapsar and adjacent areas like Mundhwa, Uruli Devachi, and Handewadi Road are already overburdened with multiple garbage processing units. They fear this new plant will further compromise the health of more than five lakh residents living nearby.
“This project is an injustice to the people of Hadapsar. If it is not withdrawn, we will launch strong public protests,” Sasane warned.
The opposition leaders and residents are demanding that PMC reconsider the location and explore alternative sites for the facility. With mounting political pressure and rising public concern, the fate of the Ramtekdi garbage processing plant remains uncertain.
