Pune, 5th June 2025: Pune City police have launched a dedicated campaign to ensure the safety and security of women commuters on public buses operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The initiative comes in response to recent complaints from passengers, especially women, school, and college students, about incidents such as theft, harassment, and vandalism at bus stops and on buses.

To address these concerns, a special police squad consisting of two Police Inspectors, one Assistant Police Inspector, one Police Sub-Inspector, and 22 Police Constables has been deployed. This team will patrol major bus terminals and crowded routes during peak morning and evening hours, traveling on PMPML buses to monitor and deter criminal activities.

The move follows directives from the PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Deepa Mudhol-Munde to the Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar after a rise in reported cases of theft of valuables, bag snatching, and incidents of harassment, including inappropriate remarks and gestures directed at women. There have also been instances of anti-social elements defacing BRT bus stations with obscene graffiti and images.

The police patrols aim to make public transport safer, especially for women, and to restore confidence among daily commuters. The police presence is expected to provide timely assistance and create a more secure environment for all passengers, with a special focus on the safety of women travelers.
