Pune: Students Take Initiative to Restore Historic Bahulicha Haud

Hinjawadi, 27th May 2025: Students from Delhi Public School (DPS) Hinjawadi recently took on the task of rebuilding Bahulicha Haud, a 19th-century water fountain, with passion, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility for historical preservation. Built in 1880 by Dr. Vishram Ramji Ghole in memory of his daughter Kashibai, a symbol of the early struggle for women’s education was once a symbol of progressive values. Over the decades, the site had deteriorated and was even being used as a parking lot.
Under the mentorship of Director Siddharth Rajgharia and heritage expert Jayesh Paranjape, students conducted extensive research on the Haud’s history, organized heritage walks, and engaged with local authorities to understand the practical challenges involved in restoration.
Students engaged in meaningful discussions with local residents, partnered with civic authorities, and launched impactful social media campaigns to build public awareness. Through this process, they not only advocated for the site’s revival but also inspired a collective sense of ownership and pride within the community.
Speaking about the initiative, Siddharth Rajgarhia, Chief Learner and Director of DPS Hinjawadi said, “This project reflects our firm belief that young minds, when empowered with purpose, can shape the world around them. The Bahulicha Haud initiative is not just about restoring a site—it’s about restoring values, identity, and community pride. We are grateful and proud of our students who are acting as guardians of Pune’s heritage and proving that sustainable transformation begins with education rooted in purpose”.
Principal Dr. Jaya Parekh lauded the students for their dedication, calling the initiative a living example of the school’s motto—Service Before Self. “Our students demonstrated grit, critical thinking, and empathy throughout the journey. This isn’t just a restoration, it’s a rebirth of values. All through the process, the students, teachers, and parents kept a close eye on the progress to ensure that the Haud within itself received the attention it rightly deserved”.
The before-and-after photographs of Bahulicha Haud evidence this project’s impact. This project perfectly embodies the four values of Rigour, Reflection, Relationships, and Relevance embraced by DPS Hinjawadi, thereby strengthening the school’s mission of inculcating a Success Mindset that encourages seeing challenges as opportunities.
Through this collaborative initiative DPS Hinjawadi continues to develop responsible global citizens who will not let history slip into silence but will instead celebrate it for future generations.
