Pune, 26th May 2025: With Pune housing the highest number of helicopters in the country, the city is now set to get its own dedicated helipad, according to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murli Mohol. Addressing journalists covering the aviation and cooperative sectors on Monday, Mohol also announced plans to establish India’s largest aviation gallery in Pune, showcasing the progress and potential of the country’s aviation industry.

The minister revealed that a location for the helipad has already been identified, and discussions are underway to move forward with the project. “Given Pune’s growing prominence in the aviation sector and the concentration of helicopters here, the need for a standalone helipad is undeniable. Work on this has already begun,” Mohol said.

Highlighting key developments in the sector, Mohol also shared that the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be operational for passengers by the end of August. In addition, he stated that efforts are underway to acquire 1,000 buses for PMPML, with the state government submitting a proposal to the Centre under the PM e-Bus service scheme.

Regarding Pune Airport, Mohol confirmed that the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) survey for runway expansion has been completed. Land acquisition proceedings will begin soon and are expected to take about a month. Post expansion, international flight operations from Pune are set to increase.

Mohol also noted the success of the ‘Udaan Yatri Café’ at Pune Airport, which is now being considered for implementation at Mumbai Airport as well, owing to the positive passenger response.

Further initiatives include the development of smaller airports under the UDAN scheme in cities like Solapur, Akola, and Shirdi to improve regional air connectivity. In anticipation of the upcoming Nashik Kumbh Mela, aviation operations are also being planned to accommodate the expected influx of pilgrims from across the country.

“Pune is emerging as a key hub in India’s aviation landscape. Through projects like the helipad and aviation gallery, we aim to not only support current demands but also inspire future growth and innovation in the sector,” Mohol concluded.
