Pune Traffic Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving: 6,658 Offenders Booked Since Porsche Crash

Kalyani Nagar, 18th May 2025: In a major crackdown following the high-profile Porsche accident in Kalyani Nagar, Pune traffic police have taken stringent action against 6,658 individuals for drunk driving over the past year, officials confirmed.
Under the direction of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the Pune City Police launched a sustained campaign targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol. The drive, which began in May 2024, continued over a one-year period and includes not only fines and legal action but also recommendations for licence suspension submitted to the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
“The traffic branch has intensified enforcement since the Kalyani Nagar incident. We’ve submitted proposals to the RTO to suspend the licences of all 6,658 offenders,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende.
The tragic Porsche accident that sparked public outrage acted as a catalyst for the Pune Police to increase vigilance. Checkpoints across key traffic zones have been strengthened to curb instances of driving under the influence, especially during night hours and weekends.
“Drunk driving has led to multiple serious accidents. Our enforcement efforts are aimed at preventing further tragedies,” said Commissioner Kumar, adding that strict orders were issued not only against drunk drivers but also parents who permit underage children to operate vehicles.
As part of the ongoing campaign, the traffic department has also taken firm action against minor drivers and their guardians. So far, 82 underage two-wheeler drivers have been caught, and legal cases have been registered against 8 parents in incidents where minors were involved in serious accidents.
Police have warned that such negligence will not be tolerated and that the guardians of underage drivers could face severe legal consequences under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Pune Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to avoid drunk driving and refrain from allowing minors to drive, emphasizing that community responsibility is crucial to maintaining road safety.
