Junnar, 14th May 2025: Nikhil Kisan Kokate, a young mountaineer from the tribal village of Taleran in Junnar taluka, has etched his name in history by becoming the first tribal youth from Pune district to complete the iconic Everest Base Camp trek. This accomplishment follows his earlier feat of summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, cementing his status as a rising figure in Indian mountaineering.

Standing at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet), the Everest Base Camp trek is one of the world’s most challenging high-altitude journeys. The route spans harsh Himalayan terrain, sub-zero temperatures dipping to -14°C, and oxygen-thin air—all of which Nikhil endured with determination, months of disciplined training, and a focused mindset.

Nikhil said, “Reaching Everest Base Camp was not just a physical test but a mental one. I trained for over a year with long-distance running, swimming, and breathing drills. The Sahyadri treks helped me build stamina and resilience. Without the support of Dhyas Sahyadri Adventure and my mentors Suraj Malusare and Yash Mhaskare, this would have been impossible.”

In addition to completing the trek, Nikhil took on a leadership role during the expedition, guiding seven fellow trekkers through the demanding journey and ensuring their safe arrival at base camp—a testament to his growing expertise and confidence in high-altitude mountaineering.

His latest milestone follows his 2023 climb of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters), making him the first tribal youth from Pune to summit the African peak. With two major expeditions under his belt, Nikhil now sets his sights on a bigger dream: to scale all Seven Summits—the tallest peaks on each continent.

Nikhil’s ascent from a remote tribal village to the foot of the world’s highest mountain is not just a story of adventure, but a powerful symbol of aspiration, grit, and breaking barriers. His journey is lighting the path for other youths from underrepresented communities who dream of reaching beyond limits.

He has not only uplifted the pride of the tribal community but shown what relentless effort and vision can accomplish. He’s a role model for every young person who dares to dream.”

Pradeep Desai, Project Officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Programme (Ghodegaon), emphasized the impact of mentorship: “This accomplishment is proof of what our tribal youth can achieve with the right support. Nikhil’s mentors played a crucial role in his success. Our responsibility is to continue nurturing such talent.”
