Pune, 5th June 2025: After a spell of dry and hot weather, light to moderate rainfall brought relief to Pune and surrounding areas on Wednesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intermittent showers are expected to continue over the next few days, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning.

Rainfall data collected between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Wednesday showed Nimgiri receiving the highest rainfall at 25 mm, followed by Malin (22 mm) and Kurvande (17.5 mm). Prominent city areas such as Hadapsar, Pashan, Shivajinagar, and the NDA campus also saw over 16 mm of rain. Lighter showers were reported in Chinchwad, Girivan, Rajgurunagar, and parts of the rural belt including Haveli, Dhamdhere, and Baramati, which received minimal precipitation.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has issued a yellow alert for Pune and several districts including Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Thane, and Mumbai for the next 48 to 72 hours.

“The current rain activity is the result of an upper air cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat, which is pulling in moisture from the Arabian Sea,” explained Dr. S.D. Sanap, a senior meteorologist at IMD Pune. “The alert is mainly for thunderstorm-related weather events. We do not anticipate heavy rainfall at this stage.”

Sanap added that the combination of afternoon heat and increased moisture is triggering convective cloud formation, leading to isolated thunderstorms and short spells of rain. “This is not a widespread rain system. Residents can expect localized thunder and lightning, but not prolonged rainfall,” he clarified.

Weather experts noted that wind speeds could reach 30 to 50 km/h in isolated locations during thunderstorms, urging caution for outdoor activities.
The city is forecasted to witness thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain through June 6, as per the IMD’s short-term outlook.
